Boxee, Internet TV on your TV
Nov 25th
I’ve just downloaded and installed Boxee on my laptop. It’s a internet TV application that makes viewing digital media really simple. From a quick play around it seems to be similar to (the soon to be defunct) Joost, making available a whole range of content from different providers across the internet.
Channels included by default range from BBC’s iPlayer toKevin Rose’s Revision3 network so there’s quite a big range of content to choose from or you can access media from your own hard drive or network. The big idea behind this open source software is that it can be installed on a small pc or AppleTV box and plugged into your TV. It is compatible with remote controls so using its simple navigation you can quickly browse to whatever you want to watch. I’m not quite sure at this point how the remote control part works.
Boxee has been developed by the Zach Klein, the guy behind Vimeo and CollegeHumour and seems to have already gained a lot of traction and a keen community of hackers who are already sharing tips on what it’s best to run the software on to get the best results.
If you have loads of digital content that you’d like to consume on your TV instead of your pc and you’ve been waiting for an app that will make being the biggest TV geek on your street then Boxee is definitely worth downloading and checking out. Also props to Zach Klein who is onto his fourth online business already!
